University costs and financial support
In general, university tuition costs are usually higher than
going to TAFE but dont let this be a deterrent from endeavouring
your dream job. Some examples of financial assistance
that you may qualify for are Austudy, ABSTUDY or Fares Allowance. Centrelink provides further information and eligibility requirements for these benefits.
There are a whole range of courses available to study at
university and the fees vary significantly. For accurate
information regarding higher education tuition costs, you may want
to contact the higher education provider. Alternatively you can
access the Course Finder. The Course Finder is a searchable database of
higher education courses and provides a range of course information,
including course costs and entry requirements. For an overview,
below is a table demonstrating a range of student contributions for
full time students at university.
2010 Student contribution bands and ranges

Notes
- If you are a 'pre-2008' student the maximum student contribution amount per equivalent full-time student load
(EFTSL) in 2010 for a unit of study in accounting, administration, economics and commerce is $7,567 (indexed for
later years). Further information may be found here.
- If you are a 'pre-2010' student the maximum student contribution amount per EFTSL in 2010 for a unit of study
in education and nursing is $4,249 (indexed for later years).
- If you commenced your course of study before
1 January 2009 (and are not covered by the course transfer arrangements described below), your provider may charge
you up to the maximum student contribution amount for Band 2 for units of study in mathematics, statistics and
science that applies to students who commence in 2009 onwards rather than the maximum for the National Priorities
Band. In 2010 the Band 2 maximum is $7,657 (indexed for later years).
- If you commenced a course of study that is not a natural and physical science course of study before 1 January
2009 and transfer to a natural and physical science course of study you may be charged a student contribution
amount up to the maximum of the National Priorities Band, which is $4,249 (indexed for later years). Mathematics,
statistics and science courses of study are courses of study classified to the natural and physical sciences field
of education.
Those numbers may look daunting, but if you have your heart set
on a course there is no reason why you can not pursue it. Once again
there is a way to help fund for the education that you want to
complete. It is called the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) assists eligible students to pay their tuition costs. If you are an eligible Commonwealth supported student you can pay your student contribution by taking out a HECS-HELP loan or receive a discount for up front payments. See
going to uni to find out more about this assistance.
